********************************************************** Drummer & percussionist
DAVID
SILLIMAN's middle name should be
versatility. Whether accompanying song stylists
such as Mariah Carey, Cassandra Wilson, &
Blossom Dearie or playing with Colombian Harpist
Edmar Castaneda, David's exciting rhythmic
energies add color & mood to any musical
performance. He's also comfortable playing in
the pit of a Broadway show or with the New
Jersey Symphony. With
over 20 years of experience, his performances
have taken him to concerts & festivals in
Italy, Vienna, Berlin, the North Sea, Monterey,
Uruguay & Lithuania. David was born & raised
in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he was
exposed to a wide variety of music. His first
studies were in the Classical field, studying
snare drum, xylophone & timpani. Later
studies exposed him to Jazz, Latin Jazz,
Brazilian & Funk music. Hearing music with a
drummer & a percussionist made a strong
impression on his playing. Trying to recreate
that sound & "feel" with just one person has
become a lifetime passion. David's current setup
when needed includes a standard American drum
set augmented with a South American Cajon. Drums
from the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean
along various other percussion, some his own
creations, surround him. His performances on
percussion & drums at the Umbria Jazz
Festival, in Orvieto & Perugia, Italy with
Columbian Harpist, Edmar Castaneda, garnered
praise from critics & audiences alike.
David's unique setup allowed him to move
seamlessly from the cajon, to drum set & all
percussive "toys" in between, creating the
rhythmic sound & energy of two or three
percussionists. Years of
playing with Blossom Dearie's trio, showed
another side of David's musical talents.
Dearie's soft & understated musical styling
is matched perfectly with David's softer, highly
sensitive drumming. Highlights of Silliman's
past work include concert tours with Al DiMeola,
Cassandra Wilson, & Leslie Uggams. He also
has performed with Aretha Franklin in New
York and is featured on the VH1 Divas 2001
concert.

MORE THAN COFFEE MORE THAN
SWEETS,CAFFE DOLCE HAS FINE EATS !!!
The food, the drinks and
the atmosphere at Caffe Dolce make it a must see
if you want to experience Suffern at its
best. By Kevin T. Czerwinski The food, the drinks and
the atmosphere at Caffe Dolce make it a must see
if you want to experience Suffern at its best.
But take some time to talk
with owner/bartender/philosopher Mark McGuy
while you're there because the Caffe Dolce
experience wouldn't be complete without such a
conversation. He's been running the
not-so-little bistro on Lafayette Avenue for 13
years and he's as big a reason as any why Caffe
Dolce remains a destination for those looking to
be hip and trendy. McGuy will quote literature
and discuss it over a cup of coffee, which by
the way is among the best brews in all of
Rockland County. He'll offer insights about the
goings on in the Village or simply discuss the
menu, which by the way is spectacular if
drinking coffee isn't your thing. Caffe Dolce offers an
eclectic collection of dishes that come complete
with specialty items, pasta and soups and are
sure to appeal to any palate. And McGuy and his
staff, which features the lovely Kayla Berger
behind the bar, serve it all in a warm, friendly
fashion. "We've evolved," said
McGuy, who also owns and operates the coffee
cart in the lobby of Good Samaritan Hospital and
the concession stand at the Torne Valley
Recreation Center. "We started as a café and
dessert place and now we're a full restaurant
with a bar and a nightclub. We've sort of
consciously been evolving. We've sort of gone
along with the trends of what people wanted and
listened to our customers. "We've established our
identity over the years. People have come to
refer to us as a nice restaurant and café. We're
an institution. We've become more or less one of
the local, familiar homegrown restaurants." The menu at Caffe Dolce has
long been a favorite of Village residents but as
McGuy said, the evolution of the restaurant is
ongoing. He's currently listening to his
customers' suggestions and using their feedback
in an effort to tweak the menu and add new
dishes. McGuy also has an extensive wine list
with most bottles priced under $30. While the storefront
appearance of Caffe Dolce can be deceptive, it
shouldn't be. There's plenty of space in the
restaurant and in the back party area - it can
accommodate 70 people - allowing McGuy to host
corporate and private events. He can easily
handle close 150 people at a time, providing
intimacy without being overwhelming. Caffe Dolce is a
particularly festive place to be during the
summer months because of that back patio. McGuy
offers a mouth-watering selection of barbecued
and smoked meats, which are available
year-round, that blend in well with the party
atmosphere created by the outdoor seating. Combine that with the live
entertainment he offers on weekends at The
Cabana Bar and it is easy to see why this
seemingly little restaurant in the heart of the
Village is actually a big part of the Suffern
landscape. For more information
regarding the menu, a copy of the Caffe Dolce
newsletter or a calendar of upcoming events,
check out CaffeDolce.com. "I think our reputation is
fairly well known in the area and through
Mahwah," McGuy said. "Still, there are some
people in Suffern who have never been here.
We're one of Rockland's best-kept secrets but
that's also to my demise. I think we always
offer a good, fair value. We have fresh quality
products for a fair price." It's all part of the Caffe
Dolce experience, something you won't want to
miss while making your way through the Village.
Free two-hour parking is
available on the street in the Village while the
Parking Authority's lots are free for three
hours. The Chestnut Avenue lot and the Orange
Avenue lots are the closest to Caffe
Dolce.

Nikki Armstrong
Saturday, August
1st |

Singer/Performer Nikki
Armstrong began her performing career as a
dancer and actress at age 11. She was inspired
by the great jazz singers, Ella Fitzgerald,
Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee as well as the
great Soul and R&B artists, James Brown and
Tina Turner, and finally in her late 20's Nikki
decided to commit to singing. She has studied
music and voice in Boston , LA and New York ,
most notably with the great arranger Hal
Schaefer (Peggy Lee, Marilyn Monroe). Writing
and doing session work in Los Angles and Sydney
, Australia for the first few years was fun, but
it was live performing she craved and New York
was the place to be. For the past 10 years Nikki
has performed regularly all around the New York
Tri-State area with her bands, Whole Lotta Blues
and The Nikki Armstrong Project . As featured
guest vocalist, she has performed and or
recorded with such artists as Melvin Sparks
(Acid Jazz Guitarist) and the Great Les Paul
(Father of the Electric Guitar). As a voice
coach for over 10 years, Nikki delivers
performance workshops and singer showcases in
the Tri-state area. An
important voice in the New York area Blues and
Jazz scene Nikki is on the board of directors of
the New York Blues and Jazz Society as
Musician's Liaison; coordinating, producing, and
performing in successful Blues and Jazz events
for venues such as Birdland in NYC, Sirius Radio
as well as benefits for NOLA. In 2007 Nikki
became a Deejay on the air with her own show
Blues in the Grooves broadcasting every
Wednesday afternoon on WFDU, 89.1FM from 1pm to
3:45pm. She also runs a weekly Blues Jam and has
been doing so for the last 10 years. Nikki has four independent
CD releases and is working on another CD of all
original material due to release in 2009. Her
band Whole Lotta Blues is composed of Jason
Green on guitar, Rob Chaseman on sax, A.J. Hager
on bass, John McCann on drums and Juan Pertuz on
percussion. Nikki and crew are all musically
accomplished and perform everything from blues,
funk, rock, soul, and pop covers, to jazz
standards as well as originals. They can be seen
most regularly at Lucille's at BB Kings. Nikki
Armstrong & Whole Lotta Blues have been the
featured opening act for The Commitments, Joan
Osborne, Dave Mason, Hubert Sumlin, Parliament
Funkadelic, to name a few.
" The blues as Nikki sings
them come mixed with jazz, pop, and folk rock,
with a warm, rich contralto voice that she
colors over a wide spectrum from intimate growls
and passionate whispers to long haunting ballad
lines, and a sparkling sense of fun!'' -- -

North of the border a
hidden gem at Caffe Dolce
May 18, 11:27
On a mission looking for
live music, I heard a buzz about a little hidden
gem just north of the Bergen County border in
Suffern, NY called Caffe Dolce Trattoria and
Wine Bar. Driving by the front of this quaint
restaurant, located on the main drag of Suffern,
one could easily blink and miss an amazing
experience. Ample street parking and a decent
sized lot behind the restaurant quickly filled
as people started their weekend activities
Friday night. The aroma of home made Italian
cuisine drifted out to the street drawing in a
hungry crowd. Caffe Dolce has an intimate
setting and is a perfect choice for a romantic
evening. From sitting at the large bar for an
appetizer and a cocktail or taking a table to
have a full course meal the first thing you will
notice is the extensive wine list with bottles
ranging from $20 to $30 per bottle. Weather
permitting you can have your choice of the more
formal inside dining area or the outdoor cabana
bar.On weekends, as evening turns to night, the
cabana bar dining crowd starts to thin out and
the band sets up for a night of unforgettable
entertainment. Enter this secreted bar through a
trellis of lights next to the main entrance of
the restaurant and a delightful surprise
unfolds. Decorated with Italian lights and white
tents this courtyard takes on a vibe all its
own. Make sure to order the specialty Margarita,
a crowd pleasing favorite. The friendly bar crowd
was a perfect mix in age, ranging from twenty
something's to young baby boomers. Every face
had a smile, enjoying the upbeat entertainment
of the Rouse Brother's Blues Band. Caffe Dolce is the perfect place
for a memorable date, a carefree girl's night
out or a cool evening hanging with the boys.
Mark McGuy, owner of Caffé Dolce commented that
"people need a reason to come out and have a
good time." Mark certainly provides that with
the top notch entertainment he books at Caffe Dolce. It's the perfect
spot to enjoy great music in an upbeat
atmosphere.Caffe Dolce
is located at 24 Lafayette Avenue Suffern, NY

3D
LATIN GRAMMY
NOMINEE
"NOT YOUR MAMA'S SALSA
BAND"

The Rhythms of the
Caribbean continue to seduce the group 3D Ritmo
de Vida, leading them to their newest creation,
Que Siga La Rumba, an exciting production filled
with unforgettable melodies and dancing
rhythms. Curiously enough, Michael
Tate and Chris Amelar, the founding members of
3D Ritmo de Vida, are not Latinos, and this fact
makes the end result much more intriguing. The
melodies created by Michael and Chris are
fluent, dynamic and contain a distinctive and
progressive personality, influenced by Salsa,
Reggae, Soca, R&B, Gospel and other
Caribbean rhythms. The
band takes its name from three words beginning
with the letter D: Dynamic, Diverse and
Danceable. Keyboardist Lenny Underwood joins
them both live and in the studio. Drummer Michael Tate grew
up in his native New York influenced by the
music of Luther Vandross, The Meters, Tito
Puente, The Eagles, Jose Feliciano, Beny More,
Eddie Palmieri and Juan Luis Guerra. His
interest in the drums began at the early age of
6, when he traveled to the islands of St. Thomas
and Barbados. At 12 he began to study music and
has been influenced strongly by significant
mentors such as Yogi Horton and Bonny
Bonaparte. Playing with Kid Creole and
the Coconuts moved him towards the rich sounds
of West Indian, Afro Cuban, R&B and Gospel
music. These are his musical foundations. Chris Amelar was raised and
still lives in the suburbs of New Jersey. He
began his studies on piano and trombone before
eventually discovering the guitar at age 13.
After high school Amelar attended and graduated
from William Paterson University, studying with
jazz great Rufus Reid. His early guitar influences
were George Benson, Al DiMeola and Carlos
Santana, but his composing spirit lies with
strong melodic writers including the Beatles and
Stevie Wonder. " I used to listen to Santana and
played his music in my teen years. Another sound
that captured my attention was the sound of the
Tres (Cuban guitar), which I heard for the first
time on the record Mi Tierra by Gloria
Estefan". Que Siga La
Rumbais exceptionally composed, expanding the
scope of existing musical genres. "All the music
that we write, always has a strong melody and
lyric in mind. Many people are drawn to singing
so we decided to create a CD with an emphasis on
vocals, showcasing the talents of 4 outstanding
singers". For this album, 3D Ritmo de Vida
invited Herman Olivera, Willie Torres, Jerry
Lopez and Chris Hierro to join them. Dance, Listen and get your
Groove on...........with Que
