Don Gardner with Pat Bianco, Pete
Levin, John Cariddi JAZZY,
SOULFUL,
POP/ROCK/BLUES
DON
GARDNER, a creative & intuitive
drummer, always dazzles the audience with his
chops. He has this electrically charged
spontaneity that brings a burst of excitement to
the room.... effortlessly adding an extra spark
to the music. And like the musicians above,
he has toured the US & Europe, appeared or
recorded with numerous
Rock & Jazz greats including Tom Jones,
Mitch Rider & the Detroit Wheels, Lucy
Lawless, Grover Kemble, Annie Lenox, Bela Fleck,
Suzanne Somers, Sister Sledge, Lesley Gore &
so many more. He has appeared on TV, radio
& in a huge variety of venues from CBGBs to
the Rainbow Room, etc, etc. More than 25 years
ago, the Tuesday nite jazz gig started with Don
& Martin & John Pizzarelli playing
together every week. Thee Pizzarellis went on
the road (drummerless) & Don inherited
JazzNite. Don has invited different musicians
every week. Although some do give repeat
performances!!! Over the years there has been a
huge & varied list of talented & well
known musicians who have made the trip to NJ
& now Suffern, NY to play in this rare venue
with Don.
Pete
Levin majored in French horn at Boston
U. & the Juilliard School in NYC, where he
began playing Hammond organ with NY jazz &
pop groups & doing recording work on French
Horn. In 1974 he subbed on horn with the legendary Gil Evans &
Gil made him a regular in the band. A year later
Pete brought in a Moog synthesizer. Gil loved it
and Pete's role changed. Gil started writing for
synthesizer, transforming the band into the
electronic/accoustic hybrid sound that won 2
Grammys. One of the 1st to explore
synthesizers in the 70s, Pete was a sought after
sideman for studio & live gigs. As a writer
& musician he worked on film scores, jazz
& pop records, & 100s of TV & radio
commercials. He uses the latest computer
technology & a mixture of new & vintage
synthesizers in his own & other studios.
Almost all of Pete's live gigs are on piano
& Hammond organ. (SEE www.petelevin.com
for lots of info & photos about
this.) Besides touring with Tony Levin Band,
Gil Evans, Paul Simon, Annie Lennox & Jimmy
Giuffre, Pete's done arranging & electronic
music for films such as MISSING IN ACTION,
LEAN ON ME, SILVER BULLET, THE COLOR OF MONEY
& STAR TREK He wrote a score for a stage
production of The Dybbuk, created the electronic
score for Linda Rodgers' award-winning "Surgical
Audiotape" series, did the official band/chorus
arrangement of the U.S. Infantry song &
composed the anthem for the 1992 United Nations
Earth Summit, performing it in the U.N. General
Assembly. His favorite collaboration was with
his brother, bassist Tony Levin & drummer
Steve Gadd for "The Clams," a Spike Jones
tribute band that had a top-40 hit single "Close
To You", now a cult classic! In 1990 Pete
released his 1st solo jazz CD, "Party In The
Basement", followed by "Solitary Man"
& 2 jazz Christmas CDs with Danny
Gottlieb. Pete has a really great
website with the details of many of the exciting
projects Pete is involved in & if you look
at his discography page, you'll see that's he's
played with just about everyone. Check

Dave
Kopec and The Ramapo Mountain
Boys
Friday,
September 4
8-11PM
$10 cover includes house
drink
The Ramapo
Mountain Boys hail from the Mahwah and Ramsey,
NJ ,area and have been entertaining bluegrass
and acoustic rock fans alike for the better half
of this decade. Featuring banjoist, vocalist,
and Franklin Turnpike frontman Dave Kopec (who
has studied his 5 string axe under the legendary
Tony Trischka), the RMB are known for hard
driving breakdowns, floating waltzes, classic
fiddle tunes, and tight vocal harmonies. A
featured soloist is fiddler Bill Rinesh, a man
who can play anything from Beethoven to a
bluegrass breakdown and anything in between. The
group is rounded out by the intense guitar chops
of David Jack Dunn and the bass and high vocal
harmonies of David Tarzian. Featured in their
repetoire are numbers by Bill Monroe, Flatt and
Scruggs, Old and In The Way, and Johnny Cash,
but also interpretations of the Grateful Dead,
Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles,
too. "We try to give the fans who otherwise
would never see a bluegrass band a little rock
and roll to spark their interest. What is nice,
though, is that we end up turning people on to
the traditional stuff as well." What seems to be
turning people on are the great songs, fine
vocalizing, and hot jams the Ramapo Mountain
Boys have been delivering for several
years. |
Nikki Armstrong
Saturday, September 5
8-11PM
$10 cover includes house drink
Singer/Performer
Nikki Armstrong began her performing career as a
dancer and actress at age 11. She was inspired
by the great jazz singers, Ella Fitzgerald,
Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee as well as the
great Soul and R&B artists, James Brown and
Tina Turner, and finally in her late 20's Nikki
decided to commit to singing. She has studied
music and voice in Boston , LA and New York ,
most notably with the great arranger Hal
Schaefer (Peggy Lee, Marilyn Monroe). Writing
and doing session work in Los Angles and Sydney
, Australia for the first few years was fun, but
it was live performing she craved and New York
was the place to be. For the past 10 years
Nikki has performed regularly all around the New
York Tri-State area with her bands, Whole Lotta
Blues and The Nikki Armstrong Project . As
featured guest vocalist, she has performed and
or recorded with such artists as Melvin Sparks
(Acid Jazz Guitarist) and the Great Les Paul
(Father of the Electric Guitar). As a voice
coach for over 10 years, Nikki delivers
performance workshops and singer showcases in
the Tri-state area. An important voice in
the New York area Blues and Jazz scene Nikki is
on the board of directors of the New York Blues
and Jazz Society as Musician's Liaison;
coordinating, producing, and performing in
successful Blues and Jazz events for venues such
as Birdland in NYC, Sirius Radio as well as
benefits for NOLA. In 2007 Nikki became a Deejay
on the air with her own show Blues in the
Grooves broadcasting every Wednesday afternoon
on WFDU, 89.1FM from 1pm to 3:45pm. She also
runs a weekly Blues Jam and has been doing so
for the last 10 years. Nikki has four
independent CD releases and is working on
another CD of all original material due to
release in 2009. Her band Whole Lotta Blues is
composed of Jason Green on guitar, Rob Chaseman
on sax, A.J. Hager on bass, John McCann on drums
and Juan Pertuz on percussion. Nikki and crew
are all musically accomplished and perform
everything from blues, funk, rock, soul, and pop
covers, to jazz standards as well as originals.
They can be seen most regularly at Lucille's at
BB Kings. Nikki Armstrong & Whole Lotta
Blues have been the featured opening act for The
Commitments, Joan Osborne, Dave Mason, Hubert
Sumlin, Parliament Funkadelic, to name a
few.
" The blues as Nikki sings them
come mixed with jazz, pop, and folk rock, with
a warm, rich contralto voice that she colors
over a wide spectrum from intimate growls
and passionate whispers to long haunting
ballad lines, and a sparkling sense of fun!'' --

Magazine and Author, Ray Charles: Man and Music
